Our Commitment to Music Education

Many music educators are aware that Sweet Adelines International and the Barbershop Harmony Society exist – but they are not aware of their strong educational focus.  Educators of vocal music at all levels, from elementary to collegiate, can benefit from clinics, school visits and educational techniques offered by these organizations through their Young Women In Harmony and Youth In Harmony programs.

Both Sweet Adelines International and the Barbershop Harmony Society have cultivated long and healthy working relationships with MENC.  In 1971, MENC approved the inclusion of a barbershop quartet category in school music contests and endorsed these organizations’ involvement in school music programs.  In 1991, these organizations reaffirmed their commitment to mutual efforts in music education.

Sweet Adelines and the BHS have developed youth outreach programs and barbershop arrangements for young voices to help educators introduce barbershop to a new generation of singers.  Contact education@sweetadelineintl.org for a Young Women In Harmony education packet or freemusic@barbershop.org for materials for young men.  The materials are complimentary and include sheet music, four-part learning CDs and basic information about barbershop.

Why Promote Barbershop with Your Students?

Singing barbershop-style harmony:
Improves ear training for accurate tuning
Develops a strong sense of tonality, resolving around the circle of fifths
Helps develop sensitivity to chord balancing and choral blend
Stresses proper diction in execution of word sounds
Builds interpretative performances reflecting the intentions of the composer/lyricist
    Promotes teamwork
Develops poise, confidence, and performance skills
Might attract more young women and men into the school’s choral program
    Is a blast!

Helping Your Students Select a Voice Part

Here are some considerations in helping your students choose a voice part:

Tenor – Tenor is the highest voice part.  A tenor should have a light, pure tone that will complement but not overpower the lead.

Lead – Lead is a mid-range voice part.  Since the lead usually sings the melody, a lead should sing with authority, clarity, and a consistent quality throughout her/his range.  Leads also sing with color and warmth since they are responsible for conveying the interpretation and emotion of a song.

Baritone – Baritones cover approximately the same range as lead, with the baritone harmony crossing above and below the lead notes.  Baritones are flexible and must be very accurate.

Bass – Bass is the foundation of barbershop harmony.   Bass singers should have a rich, resonant voice and be able to sing with as much authority as the lead.

Typical vocal ranges for these voice parts are shown below:

For Young Women

For Young Men

Tenor

F above middle C – G above the staff Middle C – D an octave above

Lead

Middle C – E an octave above E below middle C – G above middle C

Baritone

B flat below middle C – C an octave above D below middle C – F above middle C
Bass F below middle C – G above middle C A octave and half below middle C – D below middle C
