Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I go for check in?
Registration begins at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at the Kentucky Dorm.  There will be signs on campus that will direct you to the drop-off location.  A detailed map of NKU's campus will be provided with the packet that is mailed upon registration.   Please try to arrive between the check-in times, 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., to allow yourself time to get in your room and get settled before our first group gathering that evening.  Directions to campus will also be enclosed in the packet and are also available on our website.

What do I need to bring to the Harmony Festival?

Room Layout/Bathroom Facilities?

Starting in 2010, we will be housed in the University Suites rather than the dorms as in the past years.  There are 2 and 4 bedroom suites, each for four persons, with two bathrooms .  If you request a specific person as your roommate when registering we will do our best to match you up.  For cost and safety reasons we always pair campers up.   Roommate changes can always be made at the Festival if needed but for paperwork reasons we have to provide the list to NKU prior to check-in so they can get the keys ready. Here is information about the suites: http://housing.nku.edu/prospective/residence/university_suites.php
More information about housing in general is here: http://www.nku.edu/campuslife/housing.php

What is the Festival schedule in terms of hours, down time, meals and breaks?
A rough schedule is currently posted on our website.  A more detailed schedule will be provided in the packet mailed upon registration.  While we try to follow this schedule as closely as possible, minor changes may be made throughout the Festival.   Any scheduled changes will be announced to the campers whenever they occur. Times that will never change are check-in, check-out and show times.

What is your supervision policy, security, curfew, etc.?
Here's a summary of the Rules of Conduct in PDF.

The schedule outlines where and when the campers are expected to be at all times throughout the Festival.  Curfew is strongly enforced at 11:30 p.m. and a bed check is mandatory.  In addition, the campers are "checked-in" after every break, meal and when they move from one part of campus to another.  Most the time everyone moves in large groups.  No student(s) are allowed to go off alone without a camp counselor or volunteer and no volunteer is allowed to be one-on-one with a single student.  Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights end with activities in the dorm building so the students are to be in that area only.  Counselors and Volunteers monitor the area around the dorms to make sure that the kids don't stray too far from the designated area.

The dorms are locked at all times and there are no college students residing in our dorm building(s).  Each camper is assigned a key card to get in and out of the building in addition to their individual dorm room key.  We also have volunteers/counselors assigned to monitor the dorms throughout the night to make sure everyone remains safe and sound.  There is a lot of walking to and from the dorms, cafeteria and rehearsal halls but the same buildings are used throughout the Festival, so after the first day the kids quickly learn the route they are to follow.  All campers will receive a map in their check-in packet that highlights the buildings we will be using.  These are the ONLY buildings the campers are allowed to be in.  If they are found anywhere else on campus they will be sent home immediately.  This is a very strict policy.

We do our best to provide the most secure environment possible without being overbearing.  We do want the campers to have fun and enjoy the experience while being responsible for their behavior.

A Code of Conduct Form will also be included in the packet of forms mailed to all registered campers.  This form, which each camper is required to sign, lays out the camp rules and expectations for each student.

Special Meal Requirements?
Meal preferences made on the registration form will be provided to the campus cafeteria.  Generally, the selection of food in the buffet provides choices to accommodate all dietary requests.  However, if your child requires something that they don't see all they need to do is ask a camp counselor or cafeteria staff for assistance.

Saturday night show - do we need tickets?
The Saturday night show is free and no tickets are required.  It is our hope that the campers' family and friends will attend.  The kids love to perform for a full house!

Show time is 7:30 p.m. The doors will open at 7:00 p.m.  Out of respect to all we ask that you not "save seats".

NKU is a fully handicap-accessible campus and wheelchair seating is available.  If you or someone in your party needs special assistance please contact the Harmony Festival at (513) 263-2157 in advance of the camp so we can make sure that we have sufficient time to make arrangements with the college.

When and where do I pick up my child at the end of the Festival?
The campers are required to pack and check out of their dorm rooms before the show.  Those without cars on campus will be provided with a secure location at the performance hall to store their belongings.  All students are released from the Festival at the end of the show.

Is there any problem with cell phone coverage in the NKU area?
The kids are welcome to bring their phones but we ask that they be turned off during rehearsals to lessen disruptions and keep the kids focused on learning.

Is there a general number/contact person for the Festival should any emergency occur and we cannot reach the child by cell?
If you need to reach your child for emergency reasons and his/her phone is not on, you can reach the following Board members 24/7:

Beth Buzek: (513) 403-0568
Bob Reckers: (859) 218-6278
Paul Coleman: (513) 253-6945

In the unlikely event that you are unable to reach one of the four of us please call the Campus Police at (859) 572-7777 and they will dispatch someone to find us.  Please make sure you tell them that your child is with the Greater Cincinnati Harmony Festival.
.
PLEASE DO NOT PICK YOUR CHILD UP EARLY FROM CAMP WITHOUT NOTIFYING A CAMP COUNSELOR OR BOARD MEMBER.

Day Campers?
All Day Campers are required to check-out before leaving campus each day.  This applies to all Day Campers regardless of whether they are being picked up or driving with another camper.  Each day camper is required to provide the name or names of who they will be leaving with on their Transportation Release.

We request that all campers stay until rehearsals are over for the day.  It is our hope that they will choose to stay through the evening activities to get the full Festival experience.  Day Campers are required to be picked up each evening before 11:00 p.m.

More specific information with regard to when, where and with whom they are to check-out will be discussed when they arrive at camp.  Since most days end with dorm area activities, most students are picked up from the "circle" or "roundabout" area by the dorms.  It is your child's responsibility to make sure they check-out each evening.   Letting their appointed counselor know when they will arrive the next day and leave each evening is requested.

All Day Campers are provided with meals/snacks when on campus.  Their Festival name tag is their meal ticket.  Like all other participants, Day Campers are not allowed to leave campus for meals.
